UVA LED (365 nm / 395 nm) Mosquito Lure & Pest Control: Principle, Advantages and Market Outlook

2025-11-28

Luring Principle

The 365 nm and 395 nm lines in the UVA band (320–400 nm) coincide with the peak sensitivity of mosquito compound eyes. The high-purity photons imitate the near-UV reflections given off by human skin and perspiration, creating a “false biological target”. LEDs first exploit the insects’ positive phototaxis, then combine 395 nm violet cues to guide adults to the source. A peripheral high-voltage grid or sticky board provides purely physical kill—no chemicals, no resistance. It is a “lure & kill” rather than a repellent strategy.

Key Advantages of UVA LEDs

Accurate Peaks

AlInGaN dies hit 365 nm or 395 nm with 11 nm FWHM, avoiding visible stray light and giving 15–25 % higher catch rates than broad-spectrum black-light tubes .

Instant-On

100 % output in 0.1 s, no warm-up; ideal for dusk/dawn switching and smart light sensors.

Cold & Miniaturised

Negligible IR, mountable on heat-sensitive fabrics (tents, screens); a 3535 package (3.5 × 3.5 mm) allows 8 mm-thin luminaires.

Green & Safe

Mercury- and ozone-free, RoHS compliant; 365 nm radiant energy is only 1/20 of sunlight and falls into the “exempt” ocular-risk group.

Long Life, Low Drain

L70 > 20 000 h; 30 % of the power of an equal-flux fluorescent BLB tube—perfect for 6–8 h all-night outdoor operation.

Performance Targets

Peak Wavelength

☑ 365 nm: highest attractiveness to Aedes, Culex and Anopheles; best for open outdoor sites.
☑ 395 nm: faint violet doubles as a pilot light; suited to domestic night-lamps.

Irradiance

☑ Outdoor trap 0.5–1 mW cm⁻² @ 30 cm; desktop 0.1–0.3 mW cm⁻²; excessive values reduce female-landing rates.

Beam Geometry

30–60 ° lens enlarges effective radius from 2 m to 5 m; 120 ° flood covers a 20 m² yard.

Spectral Purity

☑ Colour purity ≥ 90 %, visible content < 5 %, minimising sleep disturbance.

Safety Interlocks

☑ Indoor units carry a tilt-switch (cut-off at 45 °); outdoor IP66 versions add dusk & rain sensors for auto-shut-off.

Mainstream Applications

Home Appliances

AC inlets, air-purifiers and humidifiers integrate 395 nm LED strips for 30 min nightly cycles, preventing mosquitoes entering with airflow.

Public Areas

Escalator handrails with hidden 365 nm linear modules plus glue boards reduce mosquito density in subways and malls.

Cold-chain & Logistics

365 nm LED arrays over fruit-sorting belts capture vinegar flies and moth flies, cutting cross-border pest complaints.

Portable Devices

USB-powered 395 nm table-top traps and 365 nm “lure pens” (1 W) give silent, chemical-free protection for offices and nurseries .

Agriculture & Livestock

Greenhouse gantries use 365 nm LED + sticky panels, saving 60 % energy versus 20 W BLB tubes and reducing pesticide use by 30 %; pig and poultry houses install 395 nm belts to curb vector-borne African swine fever and avian influenza viruses.

Field Data

A 2021 Munich University trial showed a 37 % higher Culex catch for 365/395 nm dual-wave LEDs versus 365 nm mercury lamps, at only 38 % of the electricity . After replacing mercury BLB fixtures with UVA LEDs in a Chinese residential compound (3 m pole height, 20 m pitch), the catch rate rose 45 % while street-length annual power bills fell from ¥1 200 to ¥430 and mercury pollution was eliminated.

UVA LEDs are therefore driving a chemical-free, zero-ozone mosquito-control upgrade for homes, cities and farms. By matching wavelength and irradiance, adding secondary optics and eye-safe housings, they provide a low-cost, continuously effective and green solution against mosquito-borne nuisances and diseases.
